Tibet
Lying in the rain shadow, behind the great wall of the Himalayas is the vast expanse of the Tibetan plateau, the roof of the world. Much of the country is a spectacular arid desert..Tibet, a land veiled in secrecy for centuries, The Roof of the World with all its mystery is open to tourists. The Tibet Autonomous region of the People's Republic of China is one of the least explored and understood areas of our world. For centuries the Tibetans themselves chose to live in isolation. Nepal provides one of the few windows on the long forbidden Tibet and its culture. Nepals' relation with Tibet, both cultural and commercial, date back many centuries. The sherpas and Bhoties inhabiting the northern mountainous regions of Nepal are of Tibetan origin and share the same religion and cultural practices. Ever since Tibet was opened to the world in 1985, Nepal has become an easy and attractive gateway from which to explore Tibet.

Lhasa (3650 m.)
The capital city of Tibet, Lhasa is a city whose sights and sounds are lost in time. The Potala Palace of the Dalai Lama is 385 ft. high with 1000 shrines and 200,000 statues. They say it survived the cultural revolution only because Chou En-Lai, in appreciation of its beauty, pledged his own troops for its protection. Norbulinka Palace used to be the summer capital of the Dalai Lama. Part of it now has been turned into a museum. Jokhang Temple built more than 1300 years ago is the most revered temple in Tibet. The innermost shrine contains the oldest most precious object in Tibet -the JOWO, the Statue of Shakyamuni - The Buddha, which Prince Weng Chen brought 1300 years ago. Barkhor street is a lively market place and cultural center which attracts pilgrims, merchants and tourists. Drepung Monastery founded in 1416 was once the largest and richest monastery in Tibet. Sere Monastery is the second largest of the three monasteries in Tibet. It was founded in 1419 by disciple of Zongkaba, founder of the Yellow sect of Buddhism. Garden Monastery, the third largest monastery in Lhasa, is perched high on the mountain top with splendid views of Lhasa Valley.

Gyantse (3,950 m.)
Formerly a fort and the center of Tibet's' wool trade and a gateway to the outside world. Gyantse is the 3rd important city in Tibet today. A high rocky ridge topped by a ruined fortress runs through the middle of Gyantse dividing it into two parts. On its south-east edge is the crossroad of the old trade route either to Xigatse and Nepal or to Yadong and India.

Tsedang (3,600 m.)
Tsedang, 220 kms. South of Lhasa at an elevation of 3,600 meter, is located in the Yarlung Valley. The Samye Monastery of Tsedang was built in the 8th century by Padmasambhava, the great disciple of Buddha himself and is the oldest in Tibet.

Xigatse (3900 m.)
The second largest town in Tibet, its main attraction Tashilhunpo Monastery- the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. As one of the great centers of Buddhism, Xigatse often rivaled Lhasa and is one of Tibets' farming areas. The monastery was founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama and its highlight is the Maitreya Hall housing a 27 meter tall gold plated bronze image of the Maitreya Buddha on a lotus seat.

Xegar (4350 m.)
Xegar is a check-post on the Lhasa route, nearby is the Shakya Monastery, the oldest and the most important Bon Po Monastery in Tibet.

Zhangmu (2500 m.)
Zhangmu (or Khasa in Nepalese ) is a small trading post near the Friendship Bridge on the Tibet - Nepal boarder, 85 km. from Kathmandu city.
